Admission Information - B.A. / B.Sc. / B.Com. (Honours & General)

Academic Year 2014 - 2015



  • A candidate may be admitted to the first year of three year B.A. / B.Sc. / B.Com. (Honours / General / Major) Courses of Studies on passing H.S. (10+2) Examination in General or vocational Stream conducted by West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education or an equivalent examination conducted by other State Board / Council, or Rabindra Mukta Vidyalaya or National Open School recognized by the Distant Learning Council subject to the fulfillment of the conditions mentioned below :

    In case of other Board / Council, a candidate shall have to pass in five recognized subjects of full marks not being less than 100 each of which one shall be English. A candidate passing in four subjects shall not be eligible to such admission to the Course.

    "Marks obtained in top four subjects shall be considered to ascertain the aggregate marks of a candidate passing the examination under grade system. Also for candidates passing the H.S. (10+2) Examination from West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education under Old System, marks obtained in top five subjects shall be considered to determine their aggregate marks."

    The Candidates who did not have a subject in HS / Equivalent level but intends to apply for honours in the subject are directed to write the avarage marks for best of four subjects in the "Honours / Related Sub" field.

  • No Candiate shall be allowed for admission after a lapse of more than 3 years from the year of passing the previous qualifying examination or discontinuation of recognized regular courses of study after passing the previous qualifying Examination.

    Explanation : The year of admission will not be taken into account while calculating three (3) years from the year of passing the previous qualifying examination.


    Marks obtained in Environmental Education as a compulsory subject at the H.S. (10+2)Examination conducted by the West Bengal Council of H.S. Education or its equivalent shall not be taken into account for calculating the aggregate marks in top four subjects for the purpose of admission at the degree course of studies under this University. However, the subject "Environmental Science" studied as an elective subject of 100 marks may be taken into account for calculating the aggregate marks. Students of the (10+2) level passing out from the All India Boards/Councils (i.e. C.B.S.E.,I.S.C. and National Institute of Open Schooling) need not require to submit the Migration Certificate for getting registration under this University.

A Candiate taking up Honours Course in a subject must have obtained :

  • A minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate and 45% marks in the subject or related subject at the previous qualifying examination.
    Or,
  • 55% marks in the subject or related subject at the previous qualifying examination.
    Or,
  • 50% marks in aggregate when the candidate has not studied the subject in his/her previous qualifying examination provided all other clauses are satisfied.

    However, Candiates belonging to the Schedule Caste or Schedule Tribe community taking up Honours Course of Study must have obtained a minimum of 40% marks in the aggregate or 40% marks in the subject or related subjects at the previous qualifying examinations, as the case may be.

For B.A. & B.Sc. (Hons., Gen & Major) Courses :

For the B.A. & B.Sc. (Honours, General and Major) Courses of studies a candidate is required to choose his/her Honours and two/three elective subjects, as the case may be from among Group I to VIII by taking not more than one subject from any of the groups mentioned hereunder :

Groups - I Physics, Zoology, Education
Groups - II History, Mathematics.
Groups - III Chemistry, Sociology, Sanskrit, Bio-Chemistry.
Groups - IV Botany, Economics.
Groups - V Political Science.
Groups - VI Geography, Philosophy, Journalism & Mass Communication.
Groups - VII English.
Groups - Viii Anthropology, Computer Science, Bengali.

Some special conditions for admission to Honours Courses in Accounting and Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Education, Philosophy, Anthropology, Sociology, Botany and Zoology.

  • For admission to the B.Com. Honours courses in 'Accounting and Finance', 'Marketing', the word "subject" or "related subject" shall mean the following:
    Accountancy, Business Economics including Business Mathematics, Business organisation. Mathematics, Business Mathematics, Economics, Statistics, Business Studies, Office Practice and Secretarial Practice, Financial Accounting, Elements of Cost Accountancy and Auditing, Book Keeping, Commerce, Cost Accountancy and Principles of Management.
  • Economics : A candidate shall be allowed to take up Honours in Economics if he/she has passed in Mathematics at the H.S. Examination (10+2) conducted by West bengal Council of H.S. Education or equivalent examination in Mathematics / Business Mathematics of I.S.C. Students who passed Business Economics including Business Math in H.S. (10+2) level from W. B. Council of H.S. Education are not eligible for admission in the Honours Course in Economics.
  • Mathematics : A candidate shall be allowed to take up Honours in Mathematics if he/she has passed in Mathematics at the previous qualifying examination. A candidate who has passed Business Mathematics is not eligible for admission to Mathematics Honours Course.
  • Education : The subejct Psychology / Philosophy / Mathematics / Sociology / Economics / Political Science / History be treated as related subject.
  • Philosophy : The subject Psychology be treated as related subject.
  • Anthropology : The subject Biology be treated as related subject. A candidate shall not be allowed to take up Anthropology along with Sociology. Biology must be in plus two level.
  • Sociology : The subject Psychology / Political Science, Education, History, Philosophy, Mathematics, Economics be treated as related subject.
  • Botany : The subject Biology / Biotechnology be treated as related subject.
  • Zoology : The subject Biology / Biotechnology be treated as related subject.

Divisions of Honours and General subjects B.A. / B.Sc. :

For B.A. (Hons.) Courses :A candidate taking up Honours in B.A. Degree Course shall study -

  • Honours in any one subject of the Humanities Division and any other two subjects in the General courses taking at least one from the Humanities division.
  • However, that other things remaining the same, a candidate may take up Honours course in the B. A. in the following subjects without taking any other subject from the Division of Science / Home Science in the General Course.
    • Mathematics,
    • Geography,
    • Anthropology,
    • Psychology,
    • Economics

A candidate taking up General course of study for the B.A. Degree shall study.

  • Any three subjects from the Humanities Division.
    Or,
  • Any two subjects from the Humanities Division and any one from the Science Division/Home Science Division.

A Candidate taking up Honours Courses for B.Sc. Degree shall study -
Honours in any one subject from the Division of Science / Home Science Division and any other two subjects in General Courses taking at least one from the Science / Home Science Division.


A Candidate taking up General course for the B.Sc. Degree shall study -

  • any three subjects from the Science Division / Home Science Division.
    Or,
  • Any two subjects from the Science Division and any one subject from the Humanities Division.
    Or,
  • Any two subjects from the Home Science Division and one subject from the Humanities Division.

    FOR AWARDING B.SC. DEGREE, SUBJECTS UNDER THE HOME SCIENCE DIVISION SHALL BE TREATED AS THE SUBJECT SCIENCE DIVISION.

Candidates taking up Honours Course in their first year of study may be allowed to switch over to General Course by the Principal of respective colleges by the end of the year of admission.

Colleges will not hold any elimination / qualifying test in the midway for students admitted to the Honours Courses of Studies at the degree level. However, College can hold test and examinations according to the precedence in vogue. The Structure of the B.A., B.Sc. and B.Com. (Major) Degree Courses

A candidate who secures a minimum of 45% marks in the aggregate at the H.S. (10+2) or in an equivalent examination shall be eligible for admission to B.A. / B.Sc. / B.Com (Major) Degree Course of Studies provided he/she has passed the said examination with 5 recognized subjects of which at least one is a English carrying not less than 100 as full marks.

However, Candidates belonging to the Schedule Caste or Schedule Tribe community taking up Major Course of Study must have obtained a minimum of 40% marks in the aggregate or 40% making in the subjects or related subjects at the previous qualifying examinations, the case may be.


A candidate taking up Major course of study for the B.A. Degree shall study.

  • One Major Subject of Humanities Division.
  • Two Non-Major (Elective) subjects from the Humanities Division

    Or,

    One Non-Major (Elective) subject from the Humanities Division and
    One Non-Major (Elective) subject from the Science Division / Professional S t u d i e s / H o m e Science Division
  • Two Compulsory Languages

A candidate taking up Major course of study for the B.Sc. Degree shall study.

  • One Major Subject from the Science Division
  • Two Non-Major (Elective) subjects from the Science Division.

    Or,

    One Non-Major (Elective) subject from the Science Division and
    One Non-Major (Elective subject from the Humanities Division / Professional S t u d i e s / Home Science Division
  • Two Compulsory Languages.

A candidate taking up Major in B.Com. Degree Course shall study -

  • One Major Subject from the Commerce Division.
  • All subjects of B.Com. General Course excepting those in Group II.
  • Two Compulsory Language.

Students of B.A. / B.Sc. / B.Com. (Major) Degree Course of studies shall have to take up subject combination as indicated hereunder and in conformity with the under mentioned Regulation and with the relevant Regulation in force relating to Grouping of subjects for B.A. / B.Sc. / B.Com/ (Honours and General) Courses of Studies.

Admission to Three-Year Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) Honours Course of Studies

  • The course of studies leading to B.B.A. (Hons.) will be conducted in a college affiliated to West Bengal State University (Barasat, North 24 Parganas).
  • B.B.A. (Hons) Course shall be a 3-year course extending over three academic terms, each term covering one academic year and the examination shall be held in 3 parts, namely, B.B.A. (Hons) Part-I, Part-II, Part-III.
  • The minimum qualification for admission to the 1st year of the B.B.A. (Hons) course shall be a pass in Higher Secondary (General/Vocational) from West Bengal Council of Secondary Education or any other equivalent qualification recognized by the University with at least 55% marks for General Candidates (50% for S.C./S.T. Candidates). There shall be no common Admission Test, instead College(s) shall hold group discussions followed by interview for such admission. There shall be option to the Colleges for holding Written Admission Test. B.B.A. Expert Committee of the University shall supervise the admission process in different Colleges and list (s) of experts for holding such interviews and group discussions shall be prepared by the Expert Committee in consultation with the respective College(s).
  • The medium of instruction for the B.B.A. (Hons) course shall be English and candidates will have to answer the examination papers in English only.

Documents Required For Admission

Each selected candidate must produce the following documents at the time of admission :

  • The original and Attested Photocopies of the mark-sheet of the last qualifying examination.
  • Original and Attested Photocopies of the document showing date of birth.
  • Three copies of stamp size recent passport size photographs.
  • The caste/tribe certificate in original attested photocopies (only for S.C./S.T./OBC candidate).
  • No objection certificate from the respective Boards for the students coming from other states.
  • Character Certificate of the candidate from the last school attended (in original)
